Kollam

Kollam is a busy
Keralan market town surrounded by coconut palms and cashew
plantations. Situated on the edge of the Ashtamundi Lake
it provides the southern gateway to the backwaters. Guided
tours through Monroe Island offer the opportunity to see
prawn and fish farming and coir making. Other points of
interest in Kollam include the Shrine of Our Lady of
Velamkanni. On route from Kollam to Alappuzha(Alleppey)
the Krishnapuram Palace Museum near Kayamkulam is well
worth a visit. |

Backwaters

through the famed backwaters of the Vembanadu Lake, on
traditional houseboats. Cruising at a leisurely pace
through the intricate canal and river network, this is a
magical way to see the life and day-to-day culture of
Kuttanad (the rice bowl of Kerala) unfold before you.

refreshments. Cruises are available from Alumkadavu to
Alappuzha(Alleppey), or vice versa, from Haripad to

The Padmanabapuram
Palace, at 480 years old, is an architectural marvel and is
one of the largest wooden structures of its kind in India.
Government appointed guides are available throughout the tour
to highlight the many features of the palace, including the
Kings bed chamber, bathing pool, dancing hall, prayer hall,
and pillar hall. |

The Suchindram
Temple enshrines a single lingam, known as Sthanumalaya,
the triple aspects of God - Siva, Vishnu and Brahma. In
the temple corridor there is an 18-foot tall statue of
Hanuman. The temple is also known for its musical columns
and architectural beauty. |

Kanyakumari (Cape
Comorin) is a famed holy place, and popular pilgrim centre,
where three oceans meet - the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and
Indian Ocean. Places of interest include the temple dedicated
to the Virgin Goddess Kanyakumari, the Swami Vivekananda Rock
Memorial and the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial. |
